Two males — an adult and a juvenile — were detained by Clark County Sheriff’s deputies after they were removed from a pickup they smashed into a building while reportedly trying to escape a traffic stop.

Neither male was injured.

Samuel Swyers Jr., 37, and the juvenile were arrested at the Walter Street building in Springfield after they crashed around 10 p.m. Monday.

Officials said the pair were fleeing a traffic stop in the West High Street area and lost control of the truck.

As of this morning, truck remained lodged in a wall of the privately-owned building, which neighbors the Clark County SPCA at 21 Walter St.

The building contains vehicles, boats and other items.

A vehicle on the other side of the truck has been damaged by bricks dislodged in the crash, said an Ohio State Highway Patrol trooper.

City officials said they think the truck can be removed, but that it needs to be done carefully so that the wall doesn’t collapse.

A woman who lives across the street from the building said that she saw the end of the crash.

“We are hearing the police say you need to put your hands up and they got their guns drawn and they are telling you to get out of the truck and yelling please don’t shoot,” Lauren Mathews said.

The sheriff’s office is handling the traffic stop and state patrol is handling the crash. Part of the OSP investigation includes a determination whether deputies were in pursuit of the truck at the time of the crash. Sheriff's supervisors on scene have not offered any comment about what happened after the truck sped off from the traffic stop.

The trooper said investigators also are working to determine whether the males are related and whether the truck is stolen. The license plates and registration don’t match, according to the trooper.
