Police are continuing their investigation into a single-vehicle crash on North James H. McGee Boulevard at Philadelphia Drive on Saturday night that left two people dead.

  • Willie Finklea III, 19, and Melvin Gipp, 39, died at the scene
  • Their car split in two after slamming into a utility pole just after 8 p.m.

UPDATE @ 7:07 p.m. (March 3):  The results of autopsies on Willie Finklea III, 19, and Melvin Gipp, 39, will determine whether alcohol or drugs played a role in the crash, according to a statement the Dayton Police Department released Monday afternoon.

Both died of blunt force trauma, according to the preliminary results of autopsies performed Monday morning. It will be weeks before toxicology results are known, an investigator said.

Finklea and Gipp, both of Dayton, died at the scene, Montgomery County Coroner’s investigators confirmed.

According to the preliminary investigation, the vehicle was headed south on McGee at high speed when it hit the pole just after 8 p.m.

According to initial reports, someone was trapped inside the vehicle after the car struck a pole, breaking it in half.
