DAYTON — The University of Dayton says one of its students has died “apparently due to complications from COVID-19,” according to an email sent to campus this morning.

Michael Lang, 18, was a first-year student in the College of Arts and Sciences, the university said. He was from LaGrange, Illinois and passed away yesterday after a lengthy hospitalization. He left campus on Sept. 13 to return home for remote studying.

“The loss of Michael calls our campus community to honor his memory and support those who are affected by his passing,” the university said. “We extend our deepest sympathy and prayers to his family, friends, professors and our campus community. Campus ministers, housing and residence life, and counseling staff are always available for you and for those you know who may be deeply affected by this loss.”

The university also said prayerful support will be available in the Chapel of the Immaculate Conception between 3:30 p.m. and 5 p.m. to light a candle of remembrance.

A New York Times tracker collecting data on COVID-19 cases at universities and colleges across the country shows there have been more than 214,000 cases across at least 1,600 campuses, according to data last updated Thursday.

There have been at least 75 deaths at colleges and universities related to COVID-19 since the pandemic began, however most of the deaths were reported in the spring and involved college employees, not students, the Times reported. At least two college students in recent weeks have died after getting the virus.
