University of Dayton joins list of local colleges to postpone graduation

University of Dayton coronavirus guideline calls for athletic team travel on case-by-case basis

DAYTON — The University of Dayton has joined the growing list of local colleges and universities that will postpone or cancel their graduation commencement.

>> Coronavirus: Area colleges change commencement plans

UD President, Eric Spina, announced March 20 that the May commencement will be postponed.

"Simply put, it is inconceivable to public health authorities that it would be safe to gather 11,000 students and 3,000 employees at the UD campus any time through early May," Spina said in a taped message to the university.

A later commencement date has yet to be decided.

At the urging of state and local public health authorities and for the safety of our community, University of Dayton will be extending remote learning through spring semester and postponing May commencement activities. We realize what difficult news this is to share, not only for our students, but for the entire UD family. We empathize with the heartbreak that will come with missing the rest of the semester on campus. To the classes of 2020, we are committed to finding a future date to celebrate your successful Flyer journey. We do not have all the answers today, but our dedicated faculty and staff are working hard to make this transition to remote learning successful. Let’s all remember that we’re in this together. More information will be shared as it becomes available at http://go.udayton.edu/coronavirus.
