When they got to the scene, the personnel working at the facility told them the monitoring systems had alerted them to the leak and that everyone was out of the building, according to a spokesperson for the city.

“The Shelby County Hazardous Materials Response Team arrived on the scene and made several entries into the structure to sample and contain the leak,” Brittany King, Communications Manager for the City of Sidney, said.

Two chlorine cylinders were in use at the time of the leak and both were secured at the valves, controlling the leak.

An estimated 40 lbs. of chlorine escaped during the leak.

All issues have been resolved and the facility is operating normally with no water contamination in the process,” King said.

The shelter-in-place order was lifted shortly after 4 a.m.
