BUTLER TOWNSHIP — Vandalia-Butler High School students brought people together Saturday afternoon to remember a 15 year who died Friday.

Hundreds of students, parents, faculty and staff — not only from Vandalia-Butler but surrounding schools as well — gathered to comfort one another.

Saturday afternoon, police named 15 year old Kayla Anderson as one of the four victims of a fatal shooting in Butler Township.

A few of Kayla’s close friends shared some of their favorite memories with her.

“She never held a grudge against anyone, just no matter what,” Isabelle Sands said.

The districts superintendent Robert O’Leary said during a press conference Saturday that Kayla was a “ray of light.”

“I think when we all used to go to her house, our friend group, and we would just hang out and when she had her ferret, she’d like to try to put it in people’s shirts,” Makenzie Williamson said with a laugh.

The gathering ended with a balloon release.

The balloons included messages to Kayla and prayers as they floated into the sky.
