Vectren working to repair gas meters hit by vehicle that also hit house in Dayton

UPDATE @ 9:25 p.m.: A Vectren crew is on scene and the plan is to shut off the gas service to the affected six meters, a Vectren official said.

How many residents the shut-off will affect is not clear.

Wayne Avenue has been reopened to traffic. Clover Street remains closed.

The driver and his passenger are apparently from Africa and do not speak English very well, Dayton police said.

An officer said the driver likely will be cited for failure to control a motor vehicle.

UPDATE @ 9 p.m.:

Six gas meters were struck by the vehicle that also hit the house on Clover Street and Vectren has been called, Dayton fire officials said.

INITIAL REPORT

Fire and police are investigating a vehicle that hit a house and several gas meters in the 100 block of Clover Street, near Wayne Avenue in Dayton.

The car apparently traveled through some yards as it took out gas lines in the incident, which was reported about 8:20 p.m.

At least one house on Clover has been evacuated.

Wayne has been shut down several blocks from South Keowee Street to Park Drive for the investigation.
