KETTERING — Newly filed court records show a 21-year-old Dayton man is accused of shooting a man at least 10 times while he sat inside a car at a Kettering BP station Saturday night.

Ja’Leel R. Brooks faces two counts of murder and four counts of felonious assault for the shooting death of Anthony Gray Jr., 21, of Dayton and also shooting and injuring a second person in the car. His bond was set at $1 million.

The shooting happened at the BP at the corner of Smithville Road and Wilmington Pike around 10:30 p.m. and several officers were at the business when the gunfire happened.

Kettering Police Chief Chip Protsman said the department believes the shooting stemmed from an argument inside the car. Brooks got out of the car and shot through the driver’s window where Gray was sitting, Protsman said.

Another passenger, Demarque Young, 22, was also hit by the gunfire and was taken to the hospital, but has since been released.

Several police officers were already at the BP doing a routine business check when the shooting happened, so officers were able to quickly detain those involved.

Cruiser camera footage, which News Center 7 is not showing due to its graphic nature, captured the shooting.
