DAYTON — A large procession of law enforcement officers from several agencies left the Montgomery County Coroner’s Office Monday afternoon, escorting the body of a Clark County deputy killed in the line of duty back to Springfield.
“Deputy Matthew Yates returned to Clark County today in an awe inspiring display of respect from not only the citizens of Clark County but throughout the Miami Valley,” Sheriff Deborah Burchett said in a statement Monday evening.

The procession left the coroner’s office in Dayton just before 3 p.m. before arriving in Springfield. Once in town, it circled the Clark County Courthouse before ending at Littleton and Rue Funeral Home.
Yates, a 15-year veteran of the force, was shot Sunday morning while responding to a call at Harmony Estates Mobile Home Park, Burchett confirmed Sunday. He was flown to Miami Valley Hospital where he died from his injuries.
A similar large procession of law enforcement was seen outside of Miami Valley Hospital Sunday evening. That procession left the hospital around 6:20 p.m. and ended at the coroner’s office.
