New Concord Police were dispatched to the Moorehead Baseball Field at Muskingum University at around 7 p.m. after receiving reports of shots fired, a spokesperson for the university wrote in a news release.

When officers arrived on scene, they discovered a baseball player, visiting from Olivet College for the game, shot multiple times, the spokesperson said. The player was reportedly shot after the game.

“Emergency personnel and 911 were immediately contacted” following the shooting, the spokesperson said.

The player was transported by ambulance to a local hospital for further treatment, the spokesperson continued.

The player’s condition is currently unknown.

University officials were contacted 20 minutes after officers responded to the call. At around 7:20 p.m., they issued a campus-wide “shelter-in-place,” the spokesperson explained.

During this time, Muskingum University security, New Concord Police, and Muskingum County deputies investigated the shooting and searched for a suspect based on witness descriptions.

About 40 minutes from the start of the incident, at 7:45 p.m., a suspect was taken into custody.

At 9:15 p.m., the college lifted the “shelter-in-place” order and notified the community that law enforcement agents caught the suspect and posed no further threat to the campus.

Law enforcement agencies continued to investigate the shooting following the capture.

The shooting caused all athletic events for Saturday and Sunday to be cancelled.
