DAYTON — Volunteers and organizations came together Saturday to clean up communities across the Miami Valley in honor of Earth Day.

Five cleanups happened across Dayton as part of the “Living City Project”, including one in the neighborhood of South Park.

Courtney Colborn helped organize the cleanup and said most participants were from the neighborhood.

Colborn said things like this really bring out their pride in their community while supporting a good cause.

“It’s great because we actually use to come out every single Wednesday and clean up so it’s always nice when we do kind of a bigger event and see other people out and it usually has a little longer-lasting effect,” Colborn told News Center 7′s Brandon Lewis.

Earth Day was first recognized in 1970 and was credited with igniting the modern environmental movement.

Each Year on Earth Day, April 22, one billion people mobilize to address environmental issues.

Locally, that could mean something as little as picking up a piece of trash on the street.

Colborn said the city will pick up the trash volunteers pick up Monday.

Other neighborhoods participating in the cleanup include West Dayton, Oregon District, Burkhart and Westwood.

The clean-ups will take place through April and May, you can sign up here.
