WEST CARROLTON — The West Carrollton Police Department was one of four police departments to be nationally honored at the 2021 Destination Zero National Officer Safety and Wellness Awards on Sunday.

WCPD was honored as the recipient of the General Officer Safety Award.

During the presentation, WCPD was commended for its “multifaceted approach to addressing officer wellness and resiliency through the institution of new policies and procedures, training, equipment and programs.”

The presentation highlighted the WCPD’s peer support program to help address officers’ mental, emotional and spiritual wellness.

WCPD was commended for new load-bearing vests to help with officer safety. The new vests were said to protect officers from ‘the common problems caused by traditional soft body armor.”

The department was also honored for their addition of ballistic equipment and “go-bags” in every patrol vehicle.

The awards announcement also noted WCPD’s extensive training in traffic stops, defensive tactics and first aid.

The department’s recommendation committee was also highlighted. The committee allows officers a chance to voice their opinions on internal procedures.
