WEST CARROLLTON — West Carrollton is the newest community to add license plate reading cameras in the Miami Valley.
The cameras work by taking pictures of license plates as cars pass by. Police can then search through the pictures in times of emergencies such as amber alerts, stolen cars and other crimes.
News Center 7′s Dontre Drexelius spoke with Josh Thomas, the VP of Marketing for Flock Safety, to learn more about the cameras.

“With Flock, we focus on capturing those vehicle details of a suspect during a criminal incident, cars, type make color license plate — ultimately solve crime.”
Thomas said the cameras are not traffic cameras and will not be used to enforce traffic violations.
Centerville and Vandalia are two communities that already use license plate reading cameras.
Kettering City leaders are also talking about installing the cameras, and they could vote on a plan as soon as tomorrow.
