News Center 7′s Xavier Hershovitz caught up with mother and daughter Jennifer and Kendall Ressegie as they were out to make some holiday returns. It’s something Jennifer comes to expect each year.

“I usually buy clothes at the last minute because I’m expecting them to either not like it or not fit, and then they’re gonna have to return it,” Jennifer said. “So I want the receipt to still work.”

She’s far from alone. The National Retail Federation expects $890 billion in returns for 2024 and it’s a cost some retailers are now trying to pass onto the consumer. Abercrombie, J.Crew, and Saks are some of the big names that have added fees, specifically to ship returns. Narvar estimates a $100 item could cost a retailer $32 to restock and resell.

People can avoid those fees just by returning in-store.

“This makes returns or exchanges very quick, hassle-free,” Stephanie Carls, Retail Insights Expert with RetailMeNot, said. “If you don’t have a receipt, many stores will offer store credit or even a gift card instead.”

Carls said those looking to make returns should check the store’s policy for returns and exchanges. Many need at least a store tag or a receipt.

“Another tip is to keep items in the original packaging, even if that item was a gift. Having those original packaging and tags increases your chance of getting that full refund or exchange,” Carls said.

Without that receipt or tag, you’re really left with just one option, the re-gift. Just make sure it’s not to the person that gave it to you.
