What’s next for Ohio’s abortion block?

MIAMI VALLEY — Surgical and medical abortions will start again next week at a Kettering abortion clinic.

This is because of a court order that temporarily blocked Ohio’s abortion ban.

ACLU Ohio is representing the Women’s Med Center in Kettering and every other abortion provider in the state.

Last week, they filed a temporary restraining order in Hamilton County and the judge approved the request.

News Center 7′s Haley Kosik spoke to pro-life group Dayton Right to Life about ACLU Ohio’s temporary victory.

Executive Director Margie Christie said she was not surprised.

“They feel like they have a friendly audience in Hamilton County,” Christie said.

A judge there ruled that for the next 14 days abortions after six weeks can continue in Ohio.

A spokesperson with Women’s Med Center in Kettering said in a statement “the judges decision is a major step in the right direction for the women in Ohio.”

While Christie disagrees.

“Women don’t need abortion, women are perfectly capable of raising children, doing their job, going to school,” she said.

The Women’s Med Center originally planned on seeing its last patients Sept. 16 and closing its doors Oct. 15, but the new rule changes everything.

The spokesperson said the court’s decision sends a clear message.

“Stop trying to impede and control women. Stop trying to dictate their medical care. Stop trying to practice medicine. You are politicians, not Physicians,” the spokesperson in a statement.

The ACLU has asked the court to enter a preliminary injunction to block the law for the duration of the case.

“It’s very unprecedented to challenge a law that’s already been in place,” Christie said.

News Center 7 reached out to the ACLU for an update but has not received a response.
