The commencement ceremony marked the last time President Elfred Anthony Pinkard participated in conferring degrees to Wilberforce graduates, according to a school spokesperson.
Dr. Pinkard retires at the end of May and will begin his new duties as an HBCU presidential fellow at Brown University in Providence, RI.
Cleveland City Council member Stephanie Howse delivered the keynote address Saturday and challenged students to pursue a life that is well lived and understand the importance of balancing a commitment to the community.
The commencement also recognized the “Golden Grads,” Wilberforce alumni who graduated in 1973. Each year, graduates from the class 50 years prior are honored and identified by their bright gold-colored caps and gowns.
