A 15-game winning streak sort of took a backseat for the UD women at the Arena on Wednesday night.
The Flyers were more excited about celebrating another Atlantic 10 regular season title with a 50-44 win over George Washington.
Of course, the two went hand-in-hand as Shauna Green’s team rallied in the fourth quarter to win the title for the third time in four seasons.
“We found a way, just kind of what we’ve been doing all year,” the Flyers head coach said after the game. “Couldn’t be more happy for this group and especially these seniors. They deserve this.”
The Flyers threatened to run away with this one in the first half. Dayton led 17-3 after one quarter and the visitors from Washington, D.C., only scored 14 points in the first half.
The Colonials roared back with 22 points in the third quarter, turning what was once a 14-point deficit into a five-point lead heading into the fourth quarter.
Shakeela Fowler started the comeback with a three-pointer from the corner before Erin Whalen took over. The junior from North Carolina dropped in back-to-back threes to give the Flyers a one-point lead.
Jayla Scaife knocked down a jumper to make it 43-42 with 3:28 to play in regulation.
Whalen stretched the lead with a layup before Fowler hit four clutch free throws to help ice the win and let the home team cut down the nets.
Dayton earns the top seed in the Atlantic 10 Tournament, which will be played on the Flyers home court March 6-8.
UD puts its 15-game winning streak on the line Saturday afternoon in New York City against Fordham.
