Wright-Patterson Air Force Base and Dayton International Airport pay tribute on Wright Brothers Day

DAYTON — Wright-Patterson Air Force Base and Dayton International Airport each paid tribute to Orville and Wilbur Wright’s first successful power and controlled flight in 1903.

Both paid tributes on its Twitter pages.

“Happy Wright Brothers Day!” The 88th Air Base Wing said. “Today marks the 119th anniversary of Orville and Wilbur Wright’s first successful power and controlled flight in 1903.”

Dayton International Airport also wrote a statement acknowledging the Wright Brothers accomplishment 119 years ago.

“Today we celebrate a big day in aviation history as the Wright Brothers flew their Wright Flyer 119 years ago on December 17, 1903,” the airport said. “December 17th was acknowledge by presidential proclamation as Wright Brothers Day to honor the Wright Brothers’ contribution to aviation history.”

“From their home in Dayton, Ohio, the Wright Brothers were captivated, ‘afflicted,’ in Wilbur’s words, ‘by the belief that humans could fly,’” said President Joe Biden in a statement Friday. “They researched and experimented, redesigned and repaired, and braved dangerous early trials. When their Wright Flyer finally took to the skies over Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, on December 17, 1903, they launched the future of aviation and helped define the American spirit: bold, daring, innovative, and always asking what is next.”
