4-year-old shot with pellet gun, flown to hospital

A 4-year-old was flown to an area hospital Thursday night after the child was shot in the stomach with a pellet gun.

The child reportedly was shot once with an "air powered" pellet rifle in the navel area shortly before 9 p.m. in the 600 block of East Canal Street. The shooting was believed to be accidental, according to the Darke County Sheriff's Office.

The severity of the child's injury was not immediately known, and the incident remains under investigation. Police said the child was alert and conscious when police arrived.

The Ansonia Police Department said the child was taken to Dayton Children's Medical Center, went into surgery and then was placed in the intensive care unit.
