UPDATE: 2 people unaccounted for after massive fire in Charlotte, NC

CHARLOTTE, NC — UPDATE @ 2 p.m.:

A massive fire sent a thick plume of black smoke into the air in North Carolina this morning.

The fire broke out Thursday morning in the SouthPark area of Charlotte, according to our sister station WSOC-TV in Charlotte. The Charlotte Fire Department confirmed a fifth alarm was called for the fire.

Fire Chief Reginald Johnson told WSOC that 15 workers were rescued from the building, including one who was on a crane. There are two workers that are still unaccounted for.

At this time, one person was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries. Two others were treated on the scene.

Construction workers told WSOC that a foam spraying machine caught on fire and then spread to other floors. They also said there were nearly 100 people working at the time of the fire.

Charlotte Fire has asked residents to not call 911 unless it is an emergency.
