Miami Valley Hospital cardiologist dies from COVID-19 complications

Dr. Mukul Chandra, a prominent cardiologist and community health advocate, passed away Sunday due to damages caused by his COVID illness.

Dr. Chandra, 57, was the medical director of Cardiac Preventive Care and Research at Miami Valley Hospital. He received a plasma donation as a possible remedy for the virus after a call for help from the public, a call met by hundreds across the region and the globe alike.

His son, Shubham Chandra, briefly spoke with News Center 7′s Katy Andersen about his father.

“He was always thinking of the people of Dayton. Their love supported him and carried him, and all of us, through our hardest months,” Shubham said.

Dr. Chandra had lived on three continents, but his son said Dayton truly felt like home.

Dr. Chandra graduated from MS University in Baroda, India, and completed further trainings at SGPGI Lucknow, India; Hadassah University Hospital Ein Kerem - Jerusalem, Israel; and Emory University, Atlanta. He completed his cardiology fellowship at the University of Texas Medical Branch.

Dr. Chandra served as Medical Director of Cardiac Preventive Care and Research at And was the Vice Chair of the Cardiovascular Service Line at Miami Valley Hospital. He also was an Assistant Clinical Professor at Wright State University.

He was the recipient of the 2008 AHA Distinguished Achievement Award and the Health Care Hero and Innovator of the Year Award from the Dayton Business Journal.

He is survived by his wife, Arti, and two children, Shubham and Aayushi.

His family has asked for privacy at this time as they privately celebrate Dr. Chandra’s life.
