People who plan to conduct open burning should be aware of the rules that might affect them, ODNR said. Individuals could be held liable for damages caused by a fire they started themselves.

The ban prohibits most open burning in unincorporated areas from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. throughout the months of March, April, May, October and November, ODNR said.

Open burning is any outdoor fire that does not vent to a chimney or stack, Ohio Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) said.

Even small campfires can emit harmful chemicals, EPA said.
