Sisters start kid-created paper while home from school

A kid-created newspaper called "Coronavirus: Stuck at home" was created by one family, who like many, are looking to keep their children busy while still learning.

Katy Anderson spoke with sisters Rachel Meder, 9, and Laura Meder, 7, on their paper.

"This is kind of keeping us busy because we all of a sudden have time to do things that we didn’t before because we had school," Rachel Meder, editor-in-chief said.

While the girls haven't been able to see their friends in person, they asked them if they wanted to create articles for their paper.

They now have more than 20 reporters -- all under the age of 13.

They hold Zoom editorial meetings to come up with ideas and everyone chooses what they want to write about.

"Normally on the news they are adults and I think kids have good opinions too, so maybe they can be on more often," Rachel said.

After a week of work, they released their first newspaper

It's eight pages long and includes several articles, including "A kid's perspective on the coronavirus", "Tips on how to stay in contact with your friends", recipes and craft ideas -- even a sports and comic section.

Christiana Meder said she's learned a lot about her children and their friends by reading their articles.

She also said, that because they are young, the newspaper will act as something to reflect on.

The newspaper will help them remember how they were feeling and doing.

“This is history we are living through right now. This is like their 9/11 or space shuttle. This is something they are going to look back on and people are going to talk about ‘where were you when?’ When schools were closing and we had to stay at home? I think that’s a really cool gift to give them.”
