Springfield officials work to potential redevelopment of Kroger

SPRINGFIELD — Springfield community members like what they see when it comes to a perspective rendering for the redevelopment of the former Kroger site on South Limestone.

“It’d be a big step for this county and I hope it works out,” said Richard Diego Saunders.

The City of Springfield has entered into a letter of intent with development company, Dillin LLC. The letter basically outlines what the City and the developer have agreed upon and will eventually turn into a legally binding document.

The company, which has also done work on the Austin Landing property in Miamisburg, will work to redevelop the South Limestone corridor.

A rendering of the redeveloped Kroger site was released that includes enough space for another grocer, event planning spaces and other small businesses – although nothing is finalized yet. There are still many more steps ahead, as the City works to garner more feedback from the community.

“Following the Kroger closure, it was imperative that we moved swiftly to get another grocer back into that area, but honestly this is so much bigger than just that one space,” Assistant to the Springfield City Manager Logan Cobbs told News Center 7′s Jenna Lawson. “We’re in really tough times with COVID, but community improvement and the redevelopment of that South Limestone corridor is still at the forefront of our minds.”

The Kroger closed for good in March and left thousands on the city’s south side without access to fresh food.

A virtual community meeting was held Thursday night for people to ask the City and Larry Dillin, of Dillin LLC, questions about development opportunities near the South Limestone area.

I grew up in Springfield and I'm a big fan of all things Springfield, including Schuler's & the Clark County Fair. A career in journalism never really was a serious thought until the end of high school. You just have epiphanies sometimes, and that's the only way I can explain why I got into this line of work – but I'm happier for it!
