More than 100 firefighters called to 6-alarm fire in Cincinnati

CINCINNATI — More than 100 firefighters were called to help battle a large fire in Cincinnati Saturday.

Around 9 a.m. Cincinnati fire crews were called to reports of a fire at a “very large” vacant warehouse at the corner of Colerain Avenue and Arlington Street, Cincinnati Fire Chief Michael A. Washington told our news partners at WCPO.

When crews arrived on scene they saw heavy smoke and requested a second alarm response for more resources, Washington said.

Due to how much smoke was in the building, the heat of the flames and a structural collapse in the building Washington said crews exited the building and fought the flames from the outside.

The fire quickly grew from requiring a second-alarm response to a six-alarm response.

According to the Cincinnati Fire Department, each alarm dispatches two engines and a truck to respond as well as mutual aid from surrounding fire departments

More than 100 Cincinnati firefighters and around 25 fire companies were called to the scene, Washington said.

“This is not what we normally deal with day to day,” Washington said.

“As a fire chief, these are the most dangerous fires, different than structural, residential fires,” Washington added. “This is a situation of the unknown.”

No injuries have been reported.

The main body of the fire was knocked down around 11:45 a.m.

Firefighters will continue to monitor the fire’s progression from the air and a safe distance away from the building.

Washington said the cause of the fire is not known at this time and remains under investigation.
