Officer Burton died September 18, more than one month after being shot during a traffic stop in Richmond, Indiana.

The community came out Sunday to pay their respects as they prepare for her funeral Monday.

There were long lines to get into the visitation at the city building.

News Center 7′s Brandon Lewis was in Richmond for the visitation and said he saw people of all ages coming out to pay their respects to Officer Burton.

Lewis says Officer Burton’s family had private time with her and several law enforcement agencies also filed in the city building to pay their respects before the public viewing started.

Brenda Jerrell, from Richmond, told News Center 7 what happened to Officer Burton should never happen.

She said she came out Sunday to let people know she’s not standing for this type of violence and wanted Officer Burton’s family and Richmond Police to know she’s praying for them.

“I don’t know any of the officers that were there or any of the first responders that were there by name,” said Jerrell. “But I feel for them because they will never get over that, they will never get over that.”
