Baltimore man used fake ID to buy $135,000 BMW, police say

SILVER SPRING, Md. — A Baltimore man was arrested after trying to buy a $135,000 BMW using phony documents including a fake driver’s license and bank checks, investigators said.

Montgomery County Police said Deonte Dickens, 33, of Baltimore, tried to buy the 2022 BMW 750 on June 22, WJLA reported.

He gave the dealership a California driver’s license, four checks from M&T Bank, a credit report and an insurance card, police said. He forged the signature of a California man and was in the final steps of buying the car when an employee noticed the documents were fake, police said.

The sales director at the dealership called the police. Dickens started walking away from the building as officers arrived. He stopped and talked to one of them.

“(Officers) made contact with Dickens who admitted the California driver’s license was fraudulent as well as the credit report, social security number and insurance information and that he was using it in attempt to buy the BMW,” investigators said.

Authorities, working with the Atherton Police Department in California, determined Dickens had stolen the identity of a person there. It is unclear how.

Dickens was arrested and charged with seven counts including theft of more than $100,000, unlawful taking of a motor vehicle and possession/use of a false government ID, according to court records. He was denied bond.

Dickens had also been arrested three weeks before the incident at the car dealership.

He was arrested and charged with manufacturing counterfeit currency and theft between $25,000 to $100,000. At the time, he was released on a $1,000 bond.
