Chainsaw-wielding man accused of menacing, property damage at 2 North Carolina hotels

RALEIGH, N.C. — A North Carolina man is facing multiple charges after police said he used a chainsaw to menace at least one person at a Raleigh motel on Saturday night and to cause property damage at another hotel.

Kevin Pena, an officer with the Garner Police Department, told The News & Observer that the man is also accused of breaking into a Lowe’s hardware store in Garner and stealing items.

Jacob Matthew Vanderburg, 27, of Raleigh, was charged with second-degree kidnapping, two counts of assault with a deadly weapon, going armed to the terror of the public, four counts of injury to real property, felony larceny of a firearm and disorderly conduct, according to a news release issued Sunday evening.

Authorities confirmed that officers responded at around 9 p.m. to a South Saunders Street motel after reports of a man, later identified as Vanderburg, using a chainsaw to menace a victim, WTVD reported.

Vanderburg threatened several people at the establishment, but no injuries were reported, WRAL reported.

According to the incident report, the menacing occurred at the Super 8 motel, where Vanderburg is accused of also damaging a room door. He is also accused of damaging a room door at the nearby Claremont Inn, The News & Observer reported.

Donna-maria Harris, a spokesperson for the Raleigh Police Department, declined to provide details regarding the kidnapping charge or if a motive has been determined, the newspaper reported.
