According to a news release from the Polk County Sheriff’s Office, Pensick was driving a 2022 Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck in rural Polk County at about 6:42 a.m. CDT. Pensick, a resident of Columbia, failed to stop at a stop sign at a “T” intersection and left the roadway, coming to rest in some trees, the release stated.

He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Officials said that seatbelts were not in use during the crash, the sheriff’s office said in its news release.

Pensick was an All-Nebraska selection in 2007 and 2008 at Lincoln Northeast High School, the Omaha World-Herald reported. He committed to the University of Nebraska in January 2009, according to the newspaper.

He was a key member of the Cornhuskers offensive line in 2013 that helped the team become one of the Big Ten’s top rushing teams, the World-Herald reported.

Pensick played all 13 games in 2013 and started 12, including 11 at center and one at guard, according to the newspaper.

“Mourning the loss of one of our own,” the University of Nebraska wrote in a tweet.

The crash remains under investigation, the sheriff’s office said.
