Coronavirus: Total US COVID-19 cases top 18M as death toll approaches 320K

Total novel coronavirus cases in the United States climbed past 18 million late Monday, amassing the latest one million domestic cases in only four days, according to a Johns Hopkins University tally.

The United States’ 18,006,061 cumulative cases reported Monday represent roughly 23% of the more than 77 million global cases.

Virus-related deaths in the United States also swelled Monday to nearly 320,000 and represent nearly 19% of the slightly more than 1.7 million COVID-19 fatalities recorded to date.

The three hardest-hit states remain California with more than 1.9 million cases, resulting in 22,738 fatalities; Texas with more than 1.6 million cases, resulting in 25,839 fatalities; and Florida with more than 1.2 million cases, resulting in 20,680 fatalities. Illinois and New York follow closely behind with more than 905,000 cases and more than 857,000 cases, respectively.

Ten other states have reported at least 435,000 cases, including Ohio, Georgia, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Michigan, Wisconsin, North Carolina, Indiana, Arizona and New Jersey.
