With cities across the nation in various phases of reopening, coronavirus cases are surging in some states, while the numbers of confirmed cases per day are steadily dropping in others. Overall, there have been more than 3.2 million cases of coronavirus reported and nearly 135,000 deaths in the United States.

Relaxed social distancing measures as larger groups are allowed to gather, increased numbers of asymptomatic cases and increased testing all play a part in the rise in some areas.

Businesses in all industries have been advised to enforce safety and sanitation guidelines, and social distancing is still encouraged by official public health agencies. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is still urging people to wear face masks in public, and more recently, more than 20 states have mandated wearing masks in public as the amount of confirmed cases has risen nationwide. Some state officials have even rolled back reopening, reverting their areas to earlier phases.

As states progress into later phases of reopening, it’s important to consider federal guidelines, which advise states to show evidence of a downward trajectory of reported coronavirus cases within a 14-day period before proceeding to a phased opening.

A downward trajectory means the number of coronavirus cases has been decreasing. An upward trajectory means the number of coronavirus cases has been increasing.

In the list below, see how cases are trending in each state, using data provided by Johns Hopkins University. Also compare the number of new cases reported Thursday, the most recent day the data was collected, versus the day with the highest number of new cases reported in each state.

Keep in mind, testing is becoming more available in states, which means more people have been able to get tested. More testing allows more confirmed cases to be detected and reported. Even with increased testing, some states reported their highest numbers of confirmed cases of the virus in April and May.
