Multiple services planned for late NFL quarterback Dwayne Haskins

Multiple funeral services are planned for Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Dwayne Haskins, who died Saturday when he was struck by a dump truck on a South Florida interstate.

According to The Athletic, the Steelers are planning a service on April 22 at the Allegheny Center Alliance Church in Pittsburgh, his wife Kalabrya Haskins announced in a statement.

“I would like to express my sincerest gratitude to every loving soul who has supported our family during this arduous time of loss,” Kalabrya Haskins said in her statement. “The overwhelming thoughts and prayers have been fuel for our emotional depletion. ... The meaningful touches and impact Dwayne made as husband, son, brother, teammate and friend is a timeless treasure imbrued in our hearts.

“My husband was more than a great football player. He had the smile of a rainbow that touched the diversity of so many. He will forever rest and remain in our hearts (until) the end of time.”

The Florida Highway Patrol confirmed that Haskins, 24, was killed when he was hit by a dump truck while he was walking on Interstate 595 west of Fort Lauderdale, the Sun-Sentinel reported.

“Mr. Haskins was walking on a limited access facility highway/expressway for unknown reasons,” FHP said in a statement. “He was attempting to cross the westbound lanes of Interstate 595 when there was oncoming traffic. Unfortunately, he collided with an oncoming dump truck.”

Haskins was pronounced dead at the scene, FHP spokesperson Lt. Indiana Miranda confirmed to The Associated Press.

WPXI-TV, citing DK Pittsburgh Sports, said Haskins was driving to the airport to return to Pittsburgh and stopped his vehicle to get out when he was hit by the dump truck.

A memorial will also be held at noon on April 23 at Christ Church in Rockaway Township, New Jersey, WUSA-TV reported. The next day, services will occur at Bullis School in Potomac, Maryland, where Haskins attended high school, according to the television station.

Haskins was born on May 3, 1997, at Saint Peter’s Hospital in New Brunswick, New Jersey, the television station reported. He attended grade school in Highland Park and North Brunswick before moving to Potomac, Maryland.

“We have had such an overwhelming outpouring of love for our son since the news broke of our loss,” Tamara and Dwayne Haskins Sr., the quarterback’s parents, told WUSA. “Anyone who knew Dwayne knows he worked exceptionally hard to achieve such a high level of success at such a young age. He was touched by so many people on his journey to being a standout athlete and we are grateful to all of them. This pain is unimaginable and we appreciate everyone who shares in our heartbreak.”

Dwayne Haskins Jr. was drafted in the first round of the 2019 NFL draft out of Ohio State by Washington as the 15th overall pick, according to Pro Football Reference. He played in 16 games for Washington, starting 13, in 2019 and 2020. He went 3-10 as a starter, passing for 2,804 yards and 12 touchdowns. He had 14 interceptions.

Haskins played at Ohio State as a freshman and sophomore in 2017 and 2018, throwing for 5,396 yards and 54 touchdowns, according to Sports Reference. As a sophomore Haskins threw for 50 touchdowns and 4,831 yards in leading the Buckeyes to a 13-1 record and a final No. 3 ranking.

Ohio State finished the season with a 28-23 victory in the Rose Bowl against the University of Washington.

Haskins finished third in voting for the 2018 Heisman Trophy, finishing behind winner Kyler Murray and runner-up Tua Tagovailoa.
