WASHINGTON — Pete Buttigieg and his husband announced the arrival of two babies to their family.
The transportation secretary and his husband, Chasten Buttigieg, shared a photo Saturday on Twitter of the infants, named Penelope Rose and Joseph August, The Washington Post reported. Joseph was the name of Pete Buttigieg’s father, who died in 2019, the newspaper reported.
Both men are shown cradling the infants in their arms.
“Chasten and I are beyond thankful for all the kind wishes since first sharing the news that we’re becoming parents,” Pete Buttigieg wrote. “We are delighted to welcome Penelope Rose and Joseph August Buttigieg to our family.”

Pete Buttigieg, 39, is the first openly gay person to be confirmed by the Senate for a Cabinet position. Last month, he revealed that he and his husband became parents after seeking to adopt for a year.
The former mayor of South Bend, Indiana, and Chasten Buttigieg, 32, were married in June 2018, according to The Associated Press.
The Buttigiegs did not release any other information about the infants.
For some time, Chasten and I have wanted to grow our family. We’re overjoyed to share that we’ve become parents! The process isn’t done yet and we’re thankful for the love, support, and respect for our privacy that has been offered to us. We can’t wait to share more soon.
