The crash happened around 6:30 a.m., WSOC reported.

In all, 17 people were hurt, including 15 students who were heading to South Mecklenburg High School were injured. There were 40 students on the bus at the time of the crash.

The driver of the dump truck had what were called life-threatening injuries. He and the driver of the school bus were both trapped in the wreckage. The bus driver was freed in about 30 minutes, but it took about an hour to get the dump truck driver out because of the “high impact” between the bus and the truck. Both drivers were conscious when they were taken to the hospital, according to WSOC.

Officials said the students were able to be taken off their school bus quickly before they were put on what was called a mass casualty bus to be transported to area hospitals.

There was no word on their injuries, or conditions on Wednesday morning but all were expected to recover, WSOC reported.

There was also no word if anyone was in the car, what their condition was or if the vehicle was unoccupied.
