The man, who was in a wetsuit off the coast of Sydney, was pulled underwater by a large shark while people watched from the shoreline, CBS News reported.

One man who witnessed the attack told 9News what happened.

“We heard a yell and turned around it looked like a car had landed in the water, a big splash then the shark was chomping at the body and there was blood everywhere,” Kris Linto told the local news station.

The attack happened at Little Bay Beach near Malabar, 9News reported.

CBS News reported it was the first deadly shark attack since 1963.

The shark was estimated at 4.5 meters long or about 15 feet, Reuters reported.

The person who was killed has not been identified, but remains were recovered from the water, CBS News reported.
