Kaylin Gillis, who was in a car with three others, was struck by gunfire after a man fired two shots from his front porch into the vehicle she was driving, Washington County Sheriff Jeffrey Murphy said in a news conference Monday.

Kevin Monahan, 65, has been charged with second-degree murder in connection with Gillis’ death, Murphy said.

“It’s a very rural area with dirt roads. It’s easy to get lost. They drove up this driveway for a very short time, realized their mistake and were leaving, when Mr. Monahan came out and fired two shots,” Murphy said. There was no interaction between Monahan and anyone in the vehicle before shots were fired, Murphy said.

After the shots were fired, Gillis drove away from the house in Hebron, New York, looking for cell phone service and then called 911.

Gillis drove about 5 miles to the nearby town of Salem, New York, before she got help. First responders began administering CPR but Gillis was pronounced dead at the scene, Murphy said.

Gillis’ shooting came two days after a Black teenager in Kansas City was shot twice by a white homeowner after he went to the wrong address to pick up his siblings.

Ralph Yari, 16, was released from the hospital this weekend after being shot in the head and in the arm by Andrew Lester, 84.

Lester was charged with first-degree assault and armed criminal action.
