BATON ROUGE, La. — A Louisiana judge has sentenced a woman to 12 years in prison after she stole a Baton Rouge man's vehicle and left his dog inside, where the animal died in the heat, officials said.
According to the Advocate, Leslie Aguillard, 31, was sentenced Thursday after pleading guilty to multiple charges, including carjacking, aggravated animal cruelty and aggravated second-degree battery, in connection with the July 2019 incident.
Authorities said Aguillard stole David Mohr's truck, which was parked with the engine and air conditioner running, outside an Antioch Road doughnut shop July 7, 2019, WBRZ-TV reported. Mohr's dog, Roleaux, was inside the vehicle during the carjacking, investigators said. Aguillard also ran over Mohr two times as he attempted to stop her from driving away, according to the Advocate.
Aguillard later abandoned the truck with Roleaux locked inside, the news outlets reported. The dog died from heat exhaustion, authorities said.
Aguillard, who appeared in court via video Thursday, apologized to Mohr, saying she had been under the influence of drugs and did not mean to hurt the dog, according to the Advocate.
