EF0 tornado confirmed in Miami County

MIAMI COUNTY — UPDATE @ 2:57 p.m:

The National Weather Service has released new details after an EF-0 tornado damaged property at the Deaton family property on Ohio 718 Wednesday night.

“A very brief, and weak tornado touched down just south of Ohio 718 destroying an outbuilding and causing damage to several trees,” the weather service said in their summary report.

Storm Center 7 Chief Meteorologist Eric Elwell said Wednesday night that Live Doppler 7 Radar showed some rotation with a storm in this area between 8 and 8:45 p.m.

The tornado was estimated to be approximately 30 yards wide and had a path length of a tenth of a mile.

The estimated maximum wind speed for the twister was 65 mph.

According to the report, a photograph taken near the damaged location showing a funnel cloud extending nearly to the ground assisted in the investigation also.

UPDATE @ 1:28 p.m.:

An EF-0 tornado has been confirmed in Miami County, according to the National Weather Service.

Damage was consistent with winds near 65 mph, the weather service said.

“What we found was a brief tornado touched down at this property,” said Brandon Peloquin, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service.

The damage included a structure on the Deaton family’s property in the 5200 block of Ohio 718.

UPDATE @ 12:50 p.m.:The National Weather Service has arrived at a property on Ohio 718, where they are surveying storm damage to determine if a tornado is responsible.

UPDATE @ 10:50 a.m.:

A preliminary storm survey is scheduled today in Miami County, where a severe thunderstorm left damage at a property on Ohio 718, according to the National Weather Service.

Results of the survey are expected later this evening.

A WHIO-TV viewer said she saw a tornado touch down between her and her neighbor’s fields between Ohio 718 and Greenlee Road in Troy Wednesday evening. She said the tornado lifted the neighbor’s barn.

“We have no confirmation of a tornado at this time, but it is being investigated,” said Storm Center 7 Chief Meteorologist Eric Elwell. “Radar did show at least some weak rotation in a few spots Wednesday evening between 8 and 8:45 p.m.”

The National Weather Service in Wilmington said the event is being reviewed to determine if a storm damage survey is needed.
