4 Flyers named preseason All-Pioneer Football League

ST. LOUIS — Four Dayton Flyers have been to the Pioneer Football League preseason all-conference team, according to a media release.

UD’s selections were wide receiver Sam Bubonics, running back Jake Chisholm, linebacker Ben Schmiesing, and offensive tackle Brian Stevens.

Chisholm was named First-Team All-PFL last year as a running back and all-purpose runner. He was also a Second Team Stats Perform FCS All-American in 2021 as an all-purpose runner after finishing second in FCS football in all-purpose yardage (163.9 yards per game). Chisholm is a co-captain this season.

Bubonics led the Flyers in receiving last year with 34 catches for 477 yards and two touchdowns; 23 of those catches came in the last five games of the season. He was an Honorable Mention All-PFL and Dayton’s Most Improved Player in 2021.

Schmeising joined UD as a graduate transfer in 2021 after playing three years at Ohio State. He started seven of 10 games and was third on the team with 74 tackles. Schmeising, a Piqua High graduate, was Second Team All-Pioneer Football League and First Team CoSIDA Academic All-District. He is also a co-captain this season.

Stevens, the third Flyer co-captain this season, started eight games at offensive tackle.

Dayton went 6-4 in 2021, including 5-3 in the Pioneer Football League.

They open the season 2022 season at Robert Morris on September 3.
