Reds’ rookie Matt McClain wins National League weekly award

CINCINNATI — Cincinnati Reds rookie Matt McClain has been named National League Player of the Week for his play during his second week in the majors.

McClain went 15 for 31 (.484) with two home runs and drove in seven runs in seven games last week for the Reds. He also scored nine runs and had three doubles. His on-base percentage was .543 and his slugging percentage was .774.

He was called up from the team’s AAA affiliate Louisville on May 15 after hitting .348 with 12 home runs and 40 RBIs and made his Major League debut at Colorado.

McClain was the 17th overall pick in the 2021 MLB Draft out of UCLA.

The Reds continue their six-game road trip Wednesday playing the Boston Red Sox at Fenway Park in Boston at 7:05 p.m.

Cincinnati won the first game, 9-8, Tuesday night.
