Dayton Flyers release full non-conference schedule for 2021-22 season

DAYTON — The Dayton Flyers will open the 2021-21 regular season at home November 9 against the University of Illinois Chicago, according to the full non-conference schedule released by the team Wednesday.

The UIC game will be the first regular season game of the season. The Flyers will play an exhibition game at UD Arena either on October 30 or November 1, but the opponent hasn’t been announced yet.

The Flyers will play three other home games before heading to Orlando to play in the ESPN Events Invitational, starting Nov. 25 against Miami (Fla.). Dayton will have two more games in Orlando as part of that tournament that will be determined based on other results.

Other home opponents for the Flyers’ non-conference schedule include Alabama State on Dec. 1, Northern Illinois Dec. 4, and Southern on Dec. 21. The highlight of the home schedule will be the Dec. 12 game against Virginia Tech, a team projected to be ranked in the preseason top 25.

Dayton will play two true road games in the non-con portion of the season, Southern Methodist on Dec. 8 and Ole Miss Dec. 18. The two road games will come between the Virginia Tech game, completing a tough three-game stretch for the Flyers against opponents in some of college basketball’s major conferences.

In total, the Flyers will play eight home games, three tournament games, and two true road games before the start of Atlantic 10 play.

Game times and the full A-10 schedule will be announced later, a UD athletics spokesperson said.

The spokesperson said UD Arena is expected to hold full capacity events throughout the season, due to the availability of COVID-19 vaccines.

“As of this writing, this is exactly what we are planning to achieve. However, we will continue to monitor evolving pandemic conditions and the latest public health guidance. If necessary, we will be prepared for protocols to be revised on short notice as conditions change,” the spokesperson said.
