Dayton Flyers score in 500th straight game in its second win of season

DAYTON — It took only one quarter for the Dayton Flyers to score in its 500th straight game in a 46-3 win over Kentucky State Saturday afternoon at Welcome Stadium in Dayton.

Freshman quarterback Dante Cascolia hit senior running Jake Chisholm for a five-yard touchdown catch with 3:26 left in the first quarter to put UD ahead, 7-0, after one quarter.

The accomplishment drew national attention as it went mention during ESPN’s College Gameday Saturday.

The last time the Dayton Flyers got shut out was on October 16, 1976 against Marshall.

Both teams each added a field goal in the second quarter and the Flyers led, 10-3, at halftime.

They each exchanged punts to start the second half but Casciola hit Chisholm for his second touchdown of the afternoon as Dayton led, 17-3.

The Thorobreds muffed the ensuing kickoff and UD tackled the returner in the end zone for a safety to extend the lead to 19-3.

The Flyers got more points as Chisholm ran nine yards into the end zone for his third touchdown of the afternoon to increase the advantage to 25-3.

Before the third quarter ended, Casciola found a wide open Cade Beam for a 29-yard touchdown pass and Dayton led, 32-3, after three quarters.

Ty Stylski and Logan Davis each added a fourth quarter touchdown run for UD to cap their first home win of the season.

Casciola went 11-18 for 182 yards and three touchdowns, also ran for 43 yards.

The Flyers improved to 2-1 overall as they are now done with non-conference play.

Dayton has a bye next week and their next game will be October 1 when they host Drake at Welcome Stadium to begin Pioneer Football League play.

Kickoff is at 1:00 p.m.
