UD Basketball alumni team, The Red Scare, advances to TBT semifinal

DAYTON — The University of Dayton men’s basketball alumni team, The Red Scare, advances to the semifinals of The Basketball Tournament (T.B.T.) beating Best Virginia, 67-60, Friday night at the UD Arena.

Scoochie Smith led all scorers with 17 points, including 10 straight points in the fourth quarter. Jordan Sibert added 12 points while Trevor Thompson and Darrell Davis each scored 11. The Red Scare will play Blue Collar in the semifinals of T.B.T. Saturday at 6 p.m.

Red Scare jumped out to an early 7-3 lead, thanks to five straight points by Jordan Sibert. C.J. Walker’s three-pointer helped Red Scare to an 19-12 lead after one quarter.

Trey Landers opened the scoring with a layup to extend the advantage to 21-12 with 8:36 left in the first half but Best Virginia went on a 13-0 run over a five minute stretch to take a 25-21 lead. Thompson scored to end a six-plus minute scoring drought to cut it to 25-23. Smith and Ryan Mikesell ended the half with baskets to give The Red Scare a 27-25 halftime advantage.

John Flowers and Smith exchanged treys to open the second half as Red Scare led, 30-28. The game was tied at 33-33 when a three by Mikesell put Red Scare ahead, 36-33. He buried another one from the beyond the arc to expand it to 49-41. But Best Virginia scored eight points to end the third quarter and tie the game at 49-49.

Devin Ebanks scored the first points of the fourth quarter to give Best Virginia at 51-49 lead. But Smith’s three-pointer with 7:09 left began a string of 10 consecutive points as Red Scare led, 59-57, with 3:33 left to begin the Elam Ending. The first team 67 points would win the game.


Sibert opened the scoring in the Elam Ending with a three-pointer and was fouled on the attempt. He missed the free throw but Thompson grabbed the miss and was fouled. He sank one of two free throws to put Red Scare ahead, 63-57. After forcing a stop, Darrell Davis buried a three to give Red Scare a 66-57 lead forcing Best Virginia to call a timeout.

Jaysean Paige’s three-pointer out of a timeout cut Red Scare’s lead to 66-60 but Mikesell was fouled at the other end. He needed one free throw to seal the game and made it.

The Red Scare will play Blue Collar U at 6 p.m. Saturday evening at the UD Arena. It is the second of two semifinal games. The first will be Aftershocks vs Autism for Americana at 4 p.m.

The University of Dayton announced there will auto session featuring current UD men’s basketball players at 4 p.m. on the East Concourse at the UD Arena.
