‘Never thought I’d do this;’ Trevor Andrews introduced as new head football coach at Dayton

DAYTON — The University of Dayton introduced Trevor Andrews as its new head football coach Wednesday, replacing the retiring Rick Chamberlin.

Andrews is a three-year letter winner UD playing as a defensive back in the 1990s. The team went 37-5 over his four years, including 11-0 in 1996, under Coach Mike Kelly.

“I got into the coaching ranks because of my experience here,” Andrews said at a news conference Wednesday. He thanked both the program’s previous head coaches, Mike Kelly and Rick Chamberlin.

“Never thought I’d do this!” said Andrews. “(Kelly and Chamberlin) You guys are my roots.”

He previously coached linebackers at Western Michigan for four seasons and prior to that, was at William & Mary for 18 years, including six as associate head coach, five as defensive coordinator and recruiting coordinator for nine years.

“We’re going to be sound, we’re going to be solid and work to get better,” Andrews said. “Our players are excited to get going.”

University of Dayton Athletic Director Neil Sullivan said the UD Football fraternity is unlike anything else.

“We needed a football coach who represented all things that we are and we have with Coach Andrews,” he said.

When Sullivan asked Andrews if he was ready to be the head football coach at Dayton, Sullivan said his response was, “You seriously have to ask me that? Do you have to ask me that?”

Andrews said he will be dedicated and committed putting a product on the field that, “the Dayton will be proud of.”
