UD has added five new new coaches to the program: John Bowes, Greg Whalen, Ted Hefter, Paul Amakhie and Nate Atkins.
Bowes will serve as the new defensive coordinator while Whalen is the team’s new offensive coordinator. Hefter will be the passing game coordinator and new quarterbacks coach. Amakhie is the defensive line coach while Nate Atkins will coach both linebackers and specials teams.
“I am very excited to be able to put this staff together,” Andrews said in a statement. “I have either coached or worked (or both) with every one of them. They are all quality people, who come to the job with the best interests of our student-athletes in mind.”
Bowes had previously served as safeties coach at New Hampshire in 2018. Whalen coached tight ends at Western Michigan in 2022 while Hefter was a graduate assistant at WMU in 2021 and 2022. Amakhie coached outside linebackers at Carnegie Mellon in 2022 while Atkins was a defensive assistant and project coordinator at Ball State from 2021-22.

“They are great coaches and teachers of the game, and will be great mentors to the young men in our program,” said Andrews. “They all have a tremendous passion for the game, and are passionate about recruiting great student-athletes to the University of Dayton.”
Dayton went 8-3 in 2022 in coach Rick Chamberlin’s final season. He announced his retirement on November 29.
