No. 24 Dayton knocks out SMU for their second win of season

DAYTON — The number 24 ranked Dayton Flyers got their second win of the 2022-23 season beating the SMU Mustangs, 74-62, Friday night at the UD Arena.

Mustapha Amzil and DaRon Holmes II each led UD with 20 points. Kobe Elvis and Mike Sharavjamts each scored 10. Toumani Camara grabbed a game-high 18 rebounds to go with eight points.

The Flyers ended the game scoring 11 straight points over the last 2:12.

Dayton led, 63-62, after Zach Nutall scored with 2:36 remaining. Amzil buried a three-pointer to increase it to 66-62. Holmes blocked Nutall’s three-point attempt and on the other end, Holmes’ layup increased the advantage to 68-62 with 1:29 to play.

Amzil was fouled on a three-point shot attempt with 48 seconds left and made all three free throws to extend it to 71-62. UD made three of four free throws to end the game.

The Flyers’ next game will be Tuesday night when they travel to Las Vegas, Nevada to play UNLV at the Thomas & Mack Center.
