Rick Chamberlin announces retirement as Dayton head coach

DAYTON — University of Dayton football coach Rick Chamberlin announced he is stepping down as head coach Tuesday morning.

He spent 48-years in the football program that as a player, assistant coach and head coach.

“After graduation, most UD students have to leave the school that they love,” Chamberlin said in a statement Tuesday. “But for me, I was the lucky one who got to stay and enjoy another 43 years at Dayton. And for that I will always be grateful.”

Chamberlin won his 100th game as Flyers head coach this past season and is just the third Division-I coach to play for his alma mater, immediately join and never leave the coaching staff and then become the head coach while staying at one school.

“But now it’s time for someone else to have the privilege of being the University of Dayton’s head football coach and learn how special it is to be a FLYER!”

Chamberlin’s record at Dayton is 107-48 as head coach He is third all-time in wins in program history behind Mike Kelly (246) and Harry Baujan (124). Chamberlin has a winning percentage of .690, second behind Kelly’s .819.

He was inducted into the University of Dayton Athletic Hall of Fame in 1989.
