KETTERING — A resurfacing project is set to begin within the next two weeks on a busy stretch of Far Hills Avenue in Kettering that is being called a big benefit for both drivers and taxpayers.

Starting around May 10, the Ohio Department of Transportation will start the project that will repave all lanes of Far Hills between East Dorothy Lane and East David Road. Crews are expected to have the project completed in the summer sometime around late July and early August.

The project has been in planning for several years but with the combination of completing projects on side roads and funding through ODOT, the repaving will begin this year.

“Several years in the making and we’re excited to see it come to fruition,” Kettering Assistant Engineer John Sliemers told News Center 7′s Mike Campbell Thursday.

Sliemers said the stretch of Far Hills was due for a repaving and was last resurfaced in 2009.

“For thoroughfares like this, especially concrete bases, that’s about the right timeframe,” he said.

The total cost of the project is around $1.3 million of which the majority is being funded by ODOT.

“ODOT is paying for 80 percent of the project cost. Which is wonderful for Kettering taxpayers. Leveraging those funds is excellent for the taxpayers,” Sliemers said.

Far Hills will remain open during the project but drivers are expected to encounter some delays while the roadwork is being completed.

“Traffic will be maintained but you can imagine its going to be more congestion, especially during peak hours. So we advise people to find alternate routes if they can. But it will be open, just congested.”

Sliemers said one of the goals for this project is to have a fully repaved section of Far Hills just in time for the Holiday at Home celebration around Labor Day.

“We’re hoping for a Holiday at Home parade this year. It sure would be nice to have smooth surface for the parade this year,” he said.
