It has been a hot and humid summer, and even though meteorological fall began Saturday, Mother Nature apparently did not get the memo.

Temperatures hit 92 degrees at the Dayton International Airport Monday and 91 degrees on Tuesday. Highs Wednesday are expected to hit 90 degrees again, making it three in a row and the fourth heat wave of 2018.

A heat wave in the Miami Valley is a stretch of three or more 90-degree days in a row. Dayton has experienced three so far: June 16-18; June 30-July 2; and Aug. 26-28. Dayton also has seen 18 90-degree days this year, which is well above the average of 13 for the year.

Not only is it hot, it also is humid this week. The heat index, which is a “feels like” temperature, looks at how hot and humid it is outside. When the air is moist and it is hot, our bodies can overheat because it is harder for sweat to evaporate (this evaporation helps cool our bodies). The heat index for the first half of the week will likely stick to the middle to upper 90s.
