Loud booms heard by some Miami Valley residents Monday could have been caused by “frost quakes.”

Recent rain and snow, along with the low temperatures, might have caused the quakes, heard as loud booms, Storm Center 7 Chief Meteorologist McCall Vrydaghs said.

“They occur when water seeps into the ground, then freezes and expands,” Vrydaghs said. “This can cause mini explosions, or loud booms, as the ground cracks.”
